Northeast Iowa – Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) will be hosting
a free information session on how your community or organization can utilize
AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) for community enhancement
projects. This free session will be held on Tuesday, July 14 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
at the SSNHA office, 604 Lafayette Street, Waterloo.
J.J. Trotta, Assistant Program Director of AmeriCorps NCCC Vinton, will be on hand to
answer questions on how to apply for assistance and what projects are eligible. Service
projects, which typically last from six to eight weeks, address critical needs in education,
public safety, the environment and other unmet needs. Organizations who may host
NCCC members include community-based organizations, both faith-based and secular;
national nonprofits; schools; cities and towns; national and state parks; and Indian
tribes.
“We are pleased to partner with AmeriCorps NCCC to host this informational session.”
commented Don Short, SSNHA President. “AmeriCorps members have been
instrumental in many significant projects including helping to establish the Heritage
Area.”
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage
areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage
Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on
the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs
and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness and rural communities – past and
