CHS Foundation funds five internships in Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area

chsfoundationlogoNortheast Iowa – Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) was awarded $10,000 from the CHS Foundation to fund college internships in the Heritage Area. Intern projects located throughout the region will focus on preserving and telling stories related to American agriculture and include:

Grout Museum District, Waterloo
Working with permanent staff, the intern will create lesson plans in relation to soil science. The lessons created will be used in both public and school programs.

Hansen’s Farm Fresh Dairy, Hudson
The intern will help develop hands-on exhibits for the newly constructed interpretive center, as well as create educational curriculum and lead guided tours of this working dairy farm.

Museums of Story City, Story City
Throughout the summer the intern will catalog and digitally preserve over 200 artifacts currently stored in a one-room schoolhouse.

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area, Waterloo
The intern will help market and facilitate a weekly agriculturally-based summer camp for youth in grades 3-6.

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Decorah
Over the course of the summer the intern will complete a first-ever inventory of agricultural tools and implements stored in the historic Painter-Berntaz Mill.

“We are grateful to the CHS Foundation for their generous support in providing agricultural learning experiences and internships. Through their donation, five college students will gain valuable work experience in relation to preserving and promoting agriculture in the state of Iowa,” said Don Short, SSNHA President.

Internships will begin in May and continue throughout the summer. For more information on specific projects or internship opportunities, please contact the individual organizations listed above. To learn more about the Intern Grant Program, click here or contact us.
