    Silos & Smokestacks Awards $10,000 in Internship Grants

    WATERLOO, Iowa- Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) recently awarded $10,000 in grants to five heritage area partner sites, enabling each to hire a summer intern.

    These interns will help preserve and tell the story of agriculture through exhibit creation and preservation of artifacts. With more than $17,000 in requests, SSNHA awarded Internship Grants to the following organizations:

    Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home, Charles City, $1,732.00
    The intern will develop a virtual prairie tour for their website. Create a new exhibit celebrating the 150 anniversary of the house. He or she will also begin the layout for a Citizenship Club booklet with five to six activities to be used by students. The intern will continue coordinating Prairie Day Camp and Family Apple Picking Day started two years ago.

    Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum, $3,000
    In preparation for a large Summer 2018 exhibit on farming, the intern will research, create feature length articles for print and e-newsletters, video blogs and increase marketing and communication efforts.

    Indian Creek Nature Center, Cedar Rapids, $2,016
    Throughout the summer, the intern will continue the Connecting Children, Food and Ecology program by interpreting and expanding three demonstration gardens with adult programming while facilitating and assisting staff with summer camps and public programs.

    National Czech & Slovak Museum, Cedar Rapids, $1,812
    The intern will manage the heritage garden, its public programs, coordinate volunteers, and lead educational activities for families and children.

    Waterloo Center for the Arts, Waterloo, $1,440
    In partnership with Hansen’s Dairy, two summer camps will be conducted where kids will learn to appreciate farm life, food and proper nutrition through fun hands-on lessons and art projects.

    SSNHA is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west.
