    Silos & Smokestacks Celebrates 13th Annual Golden Silo Awards

    WATERLOO, Iowa – Celebrate agriculture Iowa-style with Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area at the “Annual Golden Silo Awards & Barn Party,” Friday, Nov. 10.

    Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness and rural communities – past and present.

    Each year, SSNHA celebrates the best in heritage development by presenting Golden Silo Awards to individuals and organizations whose contributions demonstrate outstanding excellence in preserving and telling America’s agricultural story.

    “The story of American agriculture in the Heritage Area is constantly evolving,” said Cara Miller, president of Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area. “We’re very excited to honor those who excel in sharing the agricultural experience with visitors.”

    This year’s format feature the awards ceremony taking place in the evening followed by live music. The party will take place at Hotel Winneshiek & Opera House in Decorah.

    “This isn’t your typical gala,” said Candy Streed, director of partnerships for Silos & Smokestacks. “You can come in your bowtie and boots if you’d like to.”

    Guests will feast on a plated meal of all Iowa-style food and sip on Iowa’s finest beer and wine. Live entertainment will be provided by bluegrass and gospel band, GrassRun.

    Experience Decorah Bonus Tours

    Golden Silos attendees are invited to experience Decorah with two one-of-a-kind tours created especially for those attending the event. These are ticketed tours that require pre-registration. Choose one or both and indicate the tour(s) you are attending on your Golden Silo online registration form. Deadline to register is Oct. 27.

    • Seed Savers Exchange, Friday, Nov. 10, 2-4 pm

    Enjoy an afternoon hayride and warm cider at Seed Savers Exchange headquarters, Heritage Farm. An educational tour will also be included near our display gardens telling the founding story of the nonprofit and an overview how their collection of heritage seeds are shared and preserved at the 890-acre farm, tucked into the heart of the Northeast Iowa. Shopping will also be available at the Lillian Goldman Visitors Center and garden store, featuring seed, garden tools, gifts, and more.

    • Vesterheim Museum, Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 am-noon

    Vesterheim is the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, with over 33,000 artifacts, 12 historic buildings, a Folk Art School, and a library and archives. This is a guided tour designed especially for you, as a supporter of Silos & Smokestacks. You will receive an exclusive tour of the Painter-Bernatz Mill. You won’t want to miss seeing one of the “15 Best Small-Town Museums in the U.S.” – recognized by the world-respected travel guide, Fodor’s.
