Long Description Cruisin’ the Fossil Freeway features 19 framed color prints and five large-scale murals of Ray Troll’s whimsical, fossil-inspired artwork, all of which were created for a book of the same title, published by Troll and Johnson in 2007. The book records the “epoch tale” of the duo’s 5,000-mile road trip through the American West as they sought to explore the fossil record. The exhibit combines visuals and stories from the book.

Long Description During the Korean War, each fighting division was assigned their own Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The goal of these MASH units was to reduce permanent injury and death through better treatment on the battlefield. Because of the proximity to the front lines, these units were organized around the possibility of being able to break down and move their location within 6 hours. Since they remained close to the battlefield, they were always ready for action. The units saved many lives and, through ingenuity, significant advancements were made in medicine. Contrary to the popular media culture that MASH units practiced "meatball surgery", the work accomplished by these units was experimental at times but highly successful.

Long Description Ms. Kunzler grew up in southern Iowa, graduating in 1976 as an art major from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. She has experience teaching in public schools and community colleges in Iowa and Missouri. Ms. Kunzler is a founding member of the Pastel Society of Iowa and teaches pastel workshops throughout the state. Diane Blair Kunzler was an Artist-in-Residence at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in 2007. Her pastel of the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Cottage is displayed at the Visitor center with other works from past Artists-in-Residence. “Growing up in the rural Midwest,” said Mrs. Kunzler, “it is all but impossible not to have a connection with the land.” The paintings and pastels in the new exhibit are inspired by landscapes and natural features of the Midwest, including two paintings of the creek that trickles by the two-room cottage of Hoover’s birth.

Heartland Acres Agribition Center in Independence will be holding the 4th Annual “Quilt Turning” on Labor Day weekend 2010 – The program will be “Grandmother’s Flower Garden”. In addition to this program, it is being announced that there will also be a QUILT CONTEST the same weekend. Here are the rules: you must ‘sign up’ to participate by January 31, 2010 at Heartland Acres Agribition Center. 319 332-0123 or 319 334-4616. The ‘quilt’ must be at least a 24 inch square – you MUST USE the “Flying Geese” pattern. It must be finished and turned in by August 31, 2010 at Heartland Acres Agribition Center (2600 Swan Lake Blvd. Independence, Iowa). All quilts turned in will be displayed the first two weeks in September. Visitors over Labor Day weekend will be voting on all the participating quilts. Prizes will be awarded. Long Description Park rangers will discuss how the National Park Service is restoring this endangered habitat as part of the landscape commemorating Herbert Hoover’s life. The walk is one half-mile and lasts about one hour. Bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent are also recommended. “Laura Ingalls Wilder Remembered” begins at 1:30 p.m. inside the Hoover Presidential Library & Museum with musical selections by the widely acclaimed Marengo Civil War Band. Following the music, Sarah S. Uthoff, reference librarian at Kirkwood Community College, will portray Mrs. Wilder. The program repeats at 3:00 p.m.

Long Description Carol Colburn, who is a professor of theater, costume history, and design at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, is coming to Vesterheim from Sept. 10-12 to teach the class “Norwegian Busserull.”
Norwegian Americans wear the busserull, traditionally-styled Norwegian shirts, for heritage festivals, dancing, or enjoying outdoor life. Participants will sew imported vibrant red or blue and white striped cotton fabric to create a classic shirt to fit.

Indian Creek Nature Center Director Rich Patterson and CR-CLUC organizer Rebecca Mumaw will lead the workshop at the Nature Center that will detail the ins and outs of legally and successfully keeping hens in urban and suburban environments. Those who complete the workshop will receive a certification of completion that meets the City of Cedar Rapids requirements for keeping backyard hens.
