BESA: Albanian Muslims Who Saved Jews During World War II, Photographs by Norman Gershman
|
| When |
Tuesday, April 03, 2012 - Saturday, July 14, 2012 From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM |
| Where |
Grout Museum of History & Science
|
| Description |
This traveling exhibit was made possible through a collaboration with the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education at the University of Northern Iowa. It includes 41 photographic images and was developed by the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute |
| Long Description |
In 2003, Norman Gershman, renowned photographer, embarked on a project to find and photograph Albanian nationals and refugees from neighboring countries, during World War II. By 2004, after two photographic journeys to Albania and Kosovo he had discovered roughly 150 Muslim families who had taken part in the rescue of the Jews. During the period of 1943-1945 it is believed that the people of Greater Albania saved between two and three thousand Jews. The Muslim religious belief in Besa, Honor, is the basis for these righteous deeds of valor. Besa, the ancient code of honor, requires and Albanian to endanger his own life if necessary to save the life of anyone seeking asylum. Besa is, to this day, the highest moral law of the region, superseding religious differences, blood feuds and tribal traditions. Gershman has developed a personal photographic style focusing on portraiture, in which he lends and empathetic touch to the unique personality of each of his subjects. |

New exhibits featured will include an amazing tintype collection, the story of Helen Kogel Denton, a WAC with local ties, who was the sole typist of the D Day orders, and several traveling exhibits that focus on the role of African Americans in our nation’s wars. Our lower level will feature “Listening to the Prairie: Farming in Nature’s Image,” an exhibit that is on loan from the National History Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. Learn the role that the central region of North America and Iowa play in providing the food and fiber that every American depends upon. | Long Description |
The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History will conclude its Spring 2012 Explorers Seminar Series with a presentation by College of Education Professor Brian Hand titled “Science – what should it look like in school? Can we make this happen?” The free public seminar will be held Thursday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the museum’s Biosphere Discovery Hub and will be accompanied by light refreshments.
Hand will discuss the continually decreasing participation in the sciences from students coming out of high school, as well as question why participation has decreased and if this problem is isolated to the US. Hand will also explore how science has been represented in schools in relation to how science is conducted in the laboratory.
Introducing a new approach to learning science to combat the problem entitled the Science Writing Heuristic approach, Hand will cover the benefits this approach offers to students from as young as five to undergraduate chemistry students.
Brian Hand is a Professor of Science Education in the College of Education. A former high school teacher Hand has a strong interest in improving opportunities for student learning with all science classrooms. In particular Hand has focused his research interests on using writing as a learning tool and how language can be used to help students learn. His current research is centered on helping build students' understanding of science through the use of a language based argument approach to science inquiry.
For more information on the Explorers Seminar contact the UI Museum of Natural History at 319-335-0606 or visit http://www.uiowa.edu/mnh/.
