About Us

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 37 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. Through the development of a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA's mission is to interpret farm life, agribusiness and rural communities-past and present.

The Mission

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area preserves and tells the story of American agriculture and its global significance through partnerships and activities that celebrate the land, people, and communities of the area.

The Challenge

In the Silos & Smokestacks region, the heritage of America’s agricultural revolution still exists but it needs preservation and interpretation. American agriculture is one of the primary sources of this country’s wealth and world leadership. Our challenge is to convey the breath and scope of this story in a compelling, meaningful way.

The Network

Northeast Iowa has a unique experience to offer all age groups of visitors and Iowans. The non-profit Silos & Smokestacks organization was created to support development of regional heritage tourism and share the story of American agriculture.

Silos & Smokestacks is a 37-county region in Northeast Iowa covering over 20,000 square miles. A federally designated National Heritage Area, it functions as an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. Silos & Smokestacks is the connecting element of this regional partnership network. The attractions, sites and communities are key partners in developing the Heritage Area.

The Story

Silos & Smokestacks and its partners interpret our heritage by using six themes. Each theme explores different aspects of agriculture. The themes help visitors interpret and experience the story many ways: in small towns and large cities; on trails and county roads; and through farms, natural areas, local museums and historical buildings.

The Silos & Smokestacks interpretive themes are:
