RVP~1875Walk into RVP~1875 in Story City and take an adventure to another time. Seemingly untouched for over 125 years, RVP~1875 offers the Heritage Area a unique working museum of 19th- century style furniture. From start to finish, each piece of furniture is hand-crafted with vintage tools, using traditional 1870's methods. Over 10 years ago, Robby Pedersen started an internship as a trade worker at Living History Farms in Urbandale. Through the years, he developed a passion for 19th-century cabinetmaking. In 2004, he opened RVP~1875 in a historic building on the town's Main Street. The furniture-making process is all done by hand; it starts with chopping down local hardwoods. Robby swings his axe 800-1,000 times before the tree topples over. He even cooks up his own wood finish using a variety of ingredients such as walnuts and raspberries. 18th and 19th century influences are blended into each piece of furniture he creates. Visitors are welcome to stop in the studio anytime and several kinds of tours can be arranged. Robby offers a historic demonstration with the opportunity to get your hands dirty. RVP~1875 is open Tuesday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, call 515-975-3083 or visit http://www.rvp1875.com/. "I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who has an interest in woodworking; it was not only fun but very educational. I had no prior experience in woodworking, but Robby made this an excellent class for the beginner. After one workshop I came away with a project and a wealth of knowledge about woodworking as well as the history of early craftsman." - Bob Wagner on RVP~1875's Workshop |
