The seven villages of the Amana Colonies were settled by a German religious group in the 1850's. They established a communal economic system that is a marked contrast to the Midwest family farm tradition. The story of Amana's past and present is told by its landscape and historic buildings that include barns, stores, churches and communal kitchen houses.
