Northeastern Iowa — Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) will be part of three area Farmers Markets coming up this summer and fall. In honor of SSNHA’s 10 Year Anniversary, markets in Des Moines, Decorah and Waterloo will be visited.
The Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Travel Fair will be held Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Historic Valley Junction’s Farmers Market. Visitors will have the opportunity to create Veggie Prints and try their luck at the veggie toss at the SSNHA booth. Sidewalk chalk will be given to winners of the activities and to visitors who correctly answer questions related to Iowa’s agricultural history and the heritage area.
Decorah will be the next stop for SSNHA staff and volunteers. SSNHA will be conducting family activities at the Winneshiek Farmers Market on Saturday, June 24, 2006 from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. This event will be located right across from the Decorah City Hall. Activities planned for the Winneshiek Farmers Market include potato sack races and the chance to create a potato monster. Sidewalk chalk will be awarded to the winners!
The Downtown Waterloo Farmers Market in the Regions Bank parking lot will be the last market visited by Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area. From 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, October 21, 2006 plan to participate in potato sack races and a veggie toss. Veggie Prints will be featured along with sidewalk chalk for contest winners.
Silos & Smokestacks was congressionally designated as a National Heritage Area in October, 1996. For the past 10 years, SSNHA has been working to preserve and tell the story of American agriculture and its global significance through partnerships and activities that celebrate the land, people and communities of the area. In honor of this achievement, Silos & Smokestacks will be hosting a 10 year anniversary event on November 15. Be sure to watch for further information on this upcoming event.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 27 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities – past and present.
