Northeast Iowa – Each year, Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) celebrates the best in heritage development by presenting Golden Silo Awards to individuals and organizations whose contributions demonstrate outstanding excellence in preserving and telling America’s agricultural story. The People’s Choice “Site of the Year” is a special award presented to one deserving SSNHA Partner Site, where the public decides the winner from a group of nominees.
From March 18 through April 2, voting will be open online by clicking here, with detailed voting schedule listed below:
- March 18-24 – First-Round Voting (11 Nominees)
- March 26-April 2 – Second-Round (3 finalists)
- April 3 – Winner announced during Golden Silo Awards

Show your support for your favorite nominee and join us for the annual Golden Silo Awards Luncheon on April 3 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the Black’s Building Sky Room, Waterloo, Iowa. The event will feature Scott Cawelti performing Landscape Iowa: Poems of James Hearst, Sung. This performance is free to the public, funded in part by Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The luncheon portion of the event is $15 per person and features an Iowa pork inspired meal. Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness and rural communities – past and present.
