Park Welcomes 2018 Artist-in-Residence

WEST BRANCH, IOWA—Herbert Hoover NHS is pleased to welcome Heather Heckel as the 2018 Artist-in-Residence (AIR). The AIR Program promotes creative means of communicating the park’s national significance and its relevance to park visitors. Heckel will be in residence late June to late July. She will lead a free public presentation on Saturday, June 30 at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center.

Heckel is an artist and educator living and teaching in Port Washington, NY. She earned her BFA in Illustration from the Ringling College of Art and Design and her MAT in Art Education from the School of Visual Arts. Her artwork is in several national permanent collections, and has been shown internationally. She is in her fifth year of teaching public school Art.

Heckel’s media of choice is oil paint and colored pencils, with a fondness for representative art including portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. She is passionate about traveling and the environment. This will be her fifth AIR experience with the National Park Service.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, Iowa at exit 254 off I-80. Both are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. For more information go online at www.nps.gov/heho or call (319) 643-2541.
