The Black Horse Inn has been the centerpiece to the farming community of Sherrill since its construction was completed in 1856. First owner, Peter Fries made the Inn to support lead miners and immigrants entering the region in the late 1850’s. Built in the federal style by Irish immigrants from native limestone, the Inn is one of four remaining pre-Civil War hotels in the State of Iowa and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It once served Sherrill as the first post office, implement dealer, restaurant, hotel and dancer hall. Located in scenic Mississippi River bluff country, the Inn continues to operate as a bed and breakfast today.
