Event Description
Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) is inviting visitors to Heritage Farm for a behind-the-scenes look at SSE’s work preserving America’s food and garden heritage. Made possible by Silos & Smokestack’s National Heritage Area grant, Community Field Day attendees will tour the organization’s rare and unusual food crop gardens, Seed House, Preservation labs, and learn more about “What is an Heirloom.” Visitors will talk one-on-one with staff at SSE to learn the importance of this little-known national treasure right in the heart of Winneshiek County.
An all-organic pancake breakfast will kick-off the day’s events; hay wagon rides will carry visitors throughout the farm, and youth activities will entertain the youngsters. The Community Field Day is a fantastic and accessible opportunity for participants and their families to learn about the mission, scope, and daily work of Seed Savers Exchange – an organization that researches, saves and shares the core story of America’s agricultural heritage: a story about the intersection of people, plants and food, where “every seed tells a story.”
