Event Description
Celebrating spirituals as an oral history tradition, Celeste Bembry will take us through time starting in the 1600’s, with one of the oldest known spirituals, all the way through to today’s modern renditions. From the plains of Africa, to the plantations of the south, to urban churches and gatherings across the country, witness these timeless expressions of sorrow, hardship, jubilation, and religious faith have shaped America’s modern culture.
