Event Description

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is proud to announce the return of the annual Log Jam celebration. Kendrick Forest Products serves as the main sponsor of the festival on the weekend of June 21 & 22, 2014. It will include the “Olympics of the Forest,” a thrilling contest featuring live lumberjack competitions, historic demonstrations, an Epic Beard Contest, children’s programs, crafts, tool displays, a Saturday Morning lumberjack breakfast and much more. The weekend will focus on the rich history of the logging industry, wood carving, conservation, and forestry.

There will be a hearty lumberjack breakfast on Saturday, June 21st in the Museum’s River’s Edge Café from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Breakfast tickets can be purchased in advance at the Museum & Aquarium box office through June 19 for a savings of $1.00 per ticket. The Timberworks Lumberjacks and Sippi the River Otter will be at the breakfast to greet visitors.

Dubuque was, historically, an important hub of the timber industry due to the northern logging industry. White Pine logs were cut in the winter in Wisconsin and Minnesota and floated down the Mississippi River in huge log rafts. Once the logs arrived in Dubuque, they were sawn into lumber, milled into sashes, doors and moldings.
