Event Description
Iowa housed about 25,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners of war from 1943-1946. Algona and Clarinda were the main camps, holding about 3,000 POWs each. There were about 17 branch camps throughout the state, where the prisoners did short-term projects. Author Linda McCann spoke with people who knew the POWs or worked with them, and shares their memories. Free and open to the public.
