Event Description

The Classics at Brucemore Presents Lysistrata

The Classics at Brucemore presents Lysistrata, a timeless comedy about the battle of the sexes. As the third and final play of Aristophanes War and Peace Series, the story centers on the mayhem that ensues as the women of Athens and Sparta long for peace during a time of battle. Deciding to take matters into their own hands, the women refuse sex until their husbands and lovers end the war. David Morton, an actor in the show, said “Lysistrata may have been written a long time ago, but the humor shines light on the universal themes that are still relevant today.”  Performances run July 13-15 and July 20-22 at 7:30 pm in the Peggy Boyle Whitworth Amphitheater at Brucemore. This year’s production is directed by Leslie Charipar, a founder of the Classics.

Audiences are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnics, and beverages to the show; the gates will open at 6:30 pm for pre-show picnicking. On-site parking available by entering the Linden Drive gate. The Classics celebrates a rich history of quality live theatre, from Greek tragedy to Shakespearean comedy and 20th century American drama. Much more than a play performed outdoors, the Classics fully utilizes the natural site. By taking advantage of the environment; actors emerge from the woods, play a scene in a tree, get dunked in the pond, and help themselves to picnics in the audience space.
