Don Johnson, “The Fossil Guy,” returns in November with educational paleontology programs for children at 2:00pm on Sunday afternoons at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History. All “Fossil Guy” programs are free and open to the public, and include 30-minute talks with audience participation followed by 30-minutes of hands-on interaction with Don’s extensive fossil and replica collection. Presentations are geared toward elementary-age children and their families. Don is an amateur paleontologist from Fairfax, IA with a special interest in fossil vertebrates. His collection of fossils and fossil replicas is one of the largest in Iowa, and he has experience collecting fossils in Iowa and other states out West.
Learn about a lost world of strange mammals that lived 30 million years ago in the Western United States. Fossils of these creatures are preserved in the White River Badlands of Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota including the Badlands National Park. On display will be many fossil skulls and partial skeletons of these mammals including plant-eating oreodonts, hornless rhinos, giant pig-like entelodonts, three-toed horses, and more. Use a microscope to view microfossils recovered from anthills in the same badlands. To conclude the program, Don will share some of his experiences hunting for these fossil mammals in Nebraska.
