Event Description

For hundreds of years quilt making has stimulated imagination for the individuals who created the quilted beauties. Whether pieced from an already conceived pattern or stitched as an original design, the names given the quilted projects reflect the times, events and feelings of the people who made them. Religion, occupations and tools of the trade, politics, nature, events, and regional localities all contribute to the titles given quilts.

What’s In a Name will look at the story behind the patterns, like Jacob’s Ladder, Straight Furrows, Churn Dash, Clay’s Choice, Rose of Sharon, Hands All Around, or Road to California. Using quilts as a backdrop – with artifacts for comparison and photographs and other ephemera to enhance the experience – visitors will reflect on the names thereby gaining a different perspective on quilts while learning the reason behind the quilt’s design and final title.
