Farming has changed and evolved through the years as improvements were made in the machines used for planting and harvesting, and new strains of seed grains were developed that offered greater yields. But perhaps an even more significant influence in the farming evolution is the relationship between farmer and consumer. Over the years, farmers have focused their fields on providing the products that consumers are demanding at the grocery store. This evolving relationship between farmer and consumer is apparent today, as many farmers grow corn for use in one – or sometimes a multitude – of corn products such as ethanol for gasoline and corn sweetener, found in almost every package of processed food. ever-changing market pressures continue to spur transformation. Many large farms have become specialized while small family farms have often diversified.
