Field Trip Program

Field Trip Program Award

Thank you for your interest in the Field Trip Program Award. All available funding for the 2024-2025 school year has been awarded. We will begin accepting applications for the 2025-2026 school year in August 2025.

The Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) Field Trip Program is a grant initiative designed to help schools in the 37 county heritage area fund the transportation costs associated with field trips to designated SSNHA Heritage Sites and farm sites giving students the opportunity to learn about America’s agricultural heritage firsthand. The award funds 75% of the total amount of transportation costs to and from the school and the selected SSNHA Heritage Site or farm site. Awards will not exceed $350.00.

The Field Trip Program Award requires a 1:1 non-federal match. Schools must make a minimum 25% cash match to the awarded amount.

In-kind match may be the instructor’s time and salary, volunteer chaperone’s time, admission and/or meals.

Please review the rules and frequently asked questions document found here. (which includes examples on how to figure your match). A sample of the online application form may be found here.

When you are ready to make application, please click here to be taken to the online application.

Since the inception of the program, it has helped more than 30,000 students connect with America’s agricultural story and discover the importance of Iowa’s role in feeding the world.

Thank you to the Growmark Foundation for generously supporting this program!
