Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is a tallgrass prairie and oak savanna reconstruction project located about twenty miles east of Des Moines. The refuge offers scenic views of more than 4,000 acres of tallgrass prairie year-round. It is also home to herds of bison and elk, grassland birds, and numerous other wildlife species. Several walking trails are available for visitors, including the 1/2-mile Overlook Trail loop that is wheelchair accessible. Additionally, the five-mile Prairie Wildlife Drive (gravel roads) that enters the bison and elk enclosure offers views of these native animals and the prairie landscape. Free public programs and volunteer opportunities are also available for all ages throughout the year. Restrooms are located at the visitor center and Oak Savanna Trail parking lots. Picnic tables are located at the front of the visitor center.
