Event Description

Claudia McGehee is a Pacific Northwest native and Midwest transplant. An award-winning author and illustrator of three natural history picture books, she became captivated by Rock- well Kent and his familyʼs story after happening upon his paintings. McGeheeʼs lyrical nonfiction story “My Wilderness: An Alaskan Adventure” recounts the 1918–1919 winter spent on Alaskaʼs Fox Island from the point of view of nine-year-old Rocky, son of the painter Rockwell Kent. Vivid scratchboard-style illustrations echo the rugged subject matter with enchantment as Rocky explores the wilderness and becomes accus- tomed to island life. Including a Common Core teacherʼs guide, this engaging book shows Alaska from a young boyʼs appreciative and imaginative point of view. Specimens from the Museum of Natural Historyʼs collections will be on display to complement the artwork shown from this book. Claudia will discuss the natural history and other aspects of research involved in making this latest picture book.
