Event Description
In the United States, the third Friday of September every year is set aside as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The Sullivan Brother’s Iowa Veterans Museum will commemorate this day with a program that recognizes the service and sacrifice of Iowa POW/MIAs and a person who remembered one of them in her heart and on her wrist. We will tell the story of two individuals who never knew each other, yet who were tied together by a simple band of metal. Captain Robert Rex, USAF, of Odebolt was lost on a flight over Savannakhet Province in Laos. His remains were never found and he continues to be listed as MIA. In Waterloo, Dorothy Ackerson bought a commemorative bracelet in the early 1970s to remember the service of Captain Rex. MIA/POW commemorative bracelets, created in the early 1970, were engraved with the name, rank, and loss date of an American solider captured or missing. She has worn the bracelet continuously to 2013.
