The UNI Tallgrass Prairie Center will host a field day at the Luze Farm Corp near Dysart on June 20th. The field day will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 and is free to the public. Coffee and pastries provided at beginning of event.
Attendees will learn about the prairie strips Randy Luze has established on his farm with assistance from the Tallgrass Prairie Center’s Prairie on Farms Program. This field day will focus on practical uses of prairie for water quality improvement efforts and pollinator habitat, stand evaluation, and best practices for maintenance. Research results comparing mowed and un-mowed (“no-mow”) plots and three different seed mixes will also be shared. This event is for NRCS, SWCD, conservation planners, landowners, technical service providers and those interested in water quality improvement and pollinator recovery efforts. The event is located in the Middle Cedar Watershed.
Topics covered: Seed mix evaluation, site prep and planting, cues for successful establishment, first and second year maintenance and weed control.
The field day site will be at the Luze Farm Corp at 5718 12th Avenue, Dysart IA in Benton County. Luze Farm is approximately 3 miles northeast of Dysart, IA. From IA-8: Turn North onto 12th Ave. After almost 1 mile, the farm is on the right.
