    Museum Collections Management Workshop to be Offered

    Decorah, Iowa—Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) and Iowa Museum Association (IMA) are holding a day-long workshop, Museum Collections Management on a Shoe String, Wednesday, February 28, 2007, in Decorah, Iowa, at Vesterheim Norwegian – American Museum.

    Workshop participants will learn through demonstrations and hands-on activities how to care for, store, handle, clean, pack and move artifacts. Emphasis will be on best practices and inexpensive alternatives. This unique workshop will feature seven National Park Service (NPS) and regional historical preservation professionals, all specializing in collections management. Presenters include Denise Klein, Archive Technician, NPS Midwest Regional Office; Carol Dage, Museum Curator, Harry S. Truman National Historic Site; Susan Hakke, Museum Curator, Lincoln Home National Historic Site; Keely Rennie-Tucker, Museum Technician, Homestead National Monument of America; Tova Brandt, Curator, Vesterheim Norwegian – American Museum; Darla Hostetler, Museum Technician, Harry S. Truman National Historic Site; and Pete Sixbey, Museum Conservator, Iowa State Historical Society.

    “We are delighted to collaborate with the Iowa Museum Association, National Park Service and the State Historical Society of Iowa to provide this very important workshop on practical methods to preserve Iowa’s history through conservation of its’ artifacts,” commented Don Short, Executive Director of SSNHA.

    Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 37 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities – past and present.
