Teaching with Historic Places Program Comes to Iowa

Cedar Falls, Iowa — Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) and the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Public History Program are partnering to bring the Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) program to Northeast Iowa. The program will be presented on the UNI campus Sept. 17 & 18.

The program will start off with a free public presentation on historic places Monday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. This keynote presentation, “Power of Place,” will be held in Room 115, Seerley Hall, with a reception to follow in the Great Reading Room, Seerley Hall. Free parking is available during the keynote presentation in the UNI “B” parking lots south of University Ave.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, an interactive workshop on the program’s curriculum will be held in the Georgian Room, UNI Commons. Registration for the workshop is required and must be received by Sept. 5 as space is limited. Registration forms can be found at www.silosandsmokestacks.org.

“Providing opportunities for students, faculty, and community members to work with Public Historians is central to the mission of UNI’s Public History Program, and we welcome the opportunity to cooperate with Silos & Smokestacks to explore ways to more effectively preserve and publicize Iowa’s heritage,” commented Dr. Robert Martin, UNI History Department Head & Professor.

Washington D.C. native Beth Boland will present the TwHP program. Boland, a historian for the National Park Service and TwHP Program Manager, is nationally known for promoting the use of places as an effective tool and source of historical evidence. This is her first time presenting the program in Iowa.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with UNI’s Public History Program to bring Ms. Boland to the Heritage Area. Ms. Boland is a motivating speaker and holds a wealth of knowledge on utilizing historic places to teach about local history and culture,” added Don Short, Executive Director of SSNHA.

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 37 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west.
