Northeast Iowa – Over the past two years, photographers from both near and far have kept
their shutter fingers busy capturing the unique beauty and culture of Silos & Smokestacks
National Heritage Area (SSNHA). To celebrate the third year of the Capture the Heart of
America Photo Contest, the award for “Best of Show” will be raised to $250 cash.
Photos are due postmarked by Sept 18 and must be taken with the 37-county Heritage
Area. Guidelines and entry forms are available at www.silosandsmokestacks.org. For more
information, please call319-234-4567.
New this year, voting for “Best of Show” will be open to the public. Between Oct 12 and 18,
the top photo in each of five classes will be posted online at www.silosandsmokestacks.org
for the public to choose their favorite.
“They say a picture is worth 1,000 words,” commented Don Short, SSNHA President. “This is
very fitting, as each photo submitted holds its own unique story.”
SSNHA is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area
of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant
of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west.
Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness,
and rural communities—past and present.
