    Northeast Iowa Photo Contest Brings Entrants from Across the Country

    Northeast Iowa – The third year of Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area’s (SSNHA)
    Capture the Heart of America photo contest brought exciting new changes, including a record
    number of entries. Up from 49 entrants submitting 150 photos in 2008, this year’s contest
    brought in 352 photos from 106 entrants. Photos were submitted from visitors from as far
    away as Alaska and Georgia; as well as Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

    During the third week of October, the top photo in each of five categories was posted online
    for the public to determine the Best of Show. Nearly 600 visitors voted for their favorite photo,
    with Danyell Klein of Ankeny, IA being named Best of Show for her photo “Yankee Doodle
    Pops” taken in the East Village of Des Moines. Additional entrants receiving recognition may

    “The year’s contest brought in a record number of photos. It shows the true dedication to the
    region’s story,” commented Don Short, SSNHA President.

    The 2010 Capture the Heart of America photo contest will be announced this coming spring.

    Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas
    in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers
    37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and
    Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events,
    SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities – past and present.
