Northeast Iowa – Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is currently
accepting entries for the 2011 “Capture the Heart of America” Photo Contest. From fairs to
farms, the contest offers travelers and residents alike the opportunity to share the agricultural
experiences they uncover in this 37-county region of Northeast Iowa.
Awards will be presented for first, second and third places in each of five categories,
including Farm Life, Farmscapes, Festivals & Fairs, Heritage Area Sites and Images of the
Past (pre-1950s). An overall Best of Show will also be chosen by the public from the top
photos in each category, with voting between October 31 and November 6 at
www.silosandsmokestacks.org. Best of Show winner will receive a Tamron 70-300mm Image
Stabilizing Lens (valued at $450) donated by Porter’s Digital Cameras & Imaging.
“The photos showcase each entrant’s unique interpretation of the region’s agricultural story,
preserving timeless stories of the people and landscape of the Heritage Area,” commented

Photo contest entries are due postmarked by September 30, 2011, with guidelines and entry

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas
in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers
37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and
Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events,
SSNHA interprets past and present farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities.
