Silos & Smokestacks Offers Workshop on Lesson Plan Development and Instruction

Northeast Iowa – Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) will be hosting the workshop, “ABC’s of Lesson Plan Development & Instruction.” Taught by Courtney Clausen, an instructor at the University of Northern Iowa, participants will discuss the Iowa Core, lesson plan development and key instructional strategies. The workshop will be held Wednesday, November 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heartland Acres Agribition Center – Event Center in Independence, Iowa.

Participants will take a detailed look at the Iowa Core (Iowa’s set standards for educational development), focusing specifically on how to correlate current site programs to history, language arts and science. After learning about the Iowa Core Standards, participants will develop lesson plans that link to core standards and offer easy program outlines for staff and docents to follow. Courtney will also teach participants some of the basic instructional strategies for working with students.

“We are excited to be offering this interactive workshop, providing educators with the tools needed to effectively engage Iowa youth,” commented Don Short, SSNHA President.

The registration fee for Designated SSNHA Partner or Emerging Sites is $35 per person or $90 for three individuals from the same site. Fee for all other participants is $45 per person. Registration deadline is November 8. For more information or to register for this workshop, click here or call 319-234-4567.

SSNHA is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities—past and present.
