In 2013, the American Society of Landscape Architects recognized Four Mounds Foundation and its consultant team Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company and Frank Edgerton Martin with a Planning & Analysis Merit Award for the site’s Landscape Heritage Plan. Four Mounds retained this team to develop an illustrated site plan for the historic Four Mounds estate and gentleman’s farm.
This unique plan combines a variety of goals and challenges to restore and enhance the Four Mounds site while sensitively incorporating the infrastructure to protect the environment and meet visitor’s needs. The consultant team also donated over a hundred hours of time to go above and beyond the scope laid out in the foundation’s Request for Proposals. The result was an intense process where community stakeholders and staff spent time with the team analyzing the site’s history, intent and current and future needs.
Four Mounds undertook the first phase of the plan in 2012, restoring hard and soft landscapes while sensitively incorporating parking and utilities to meet the new site needs following the completion of the Four Mounds White House restoration. The organization worked with local landscape designer Chris Frommelt and architect Jeffrey Morton to carry out the intent of the heritage plan.
The organization’s next step is to flesh out the next phases of the plan, working its way down the winding lane that defines Four Mounds.
