Event Description

You are invited to the 20th annual conference focused on the preservation of Iowa country schools. On Friday, October 11th, you will participate in a full day of lectures, panels, and discussions covering various aspects associated with country schools: research, location, preservation, promotion, etc. You will have many opportunities to share your experiences and to learn from others throughout Iowa who have the same interests and concerns. During the afternoon you will tour the Museums of Story City and take a ride on Story City’s Antique Carousel. Friday evening will conclude with a dinner followed by a triple feature at one of Iowa’s oldest movie theaters, the Story Theatre. Featured films include:

  •  The Amish Incident in Iowa that changed education in America—Fourth Wall Films, Tammy and Kelly Rundle, Moline, Il.
  • Roll Call on the Prairie: A collection of oral stories recalling rural school life and times—Mary Doak, Grundy Center Historical Society
  • Iowa’s Unsung Prairie Transformation to Farms and One-Room Schools 1870-1900—Sandra Host

On Saturday, October 12th, a group tour, starting in Story City and traveling around Story County, will provide you an opportunity to visit several preserved and furnished country schools, as well as schools that have been repurposed into barns and homes. You will also enjoy a lunch in Ames, Iowa at the Cornucopia Restaurant & Gift Shop.
