Event Description
Basket Presentation at Montauk
Montauk Historic Site will host local historian and avid Emma Big Bear Basket collector Terry Landsgaard. The presentation will be held in the Carriage House at Montauk on Saturday Sept 27th and begin at 2:30. Terry will speak about the life of Emma Big Bear and display a variety of baskets attributed to her.
Emma Big Bear was the last Winnebago in northeast Iowa. After her relatives left for the reservation in Wisconsin, Emma Big Bear Holt stayed by her beloved Mississippi River, making beautiful baskets and jewelry for a living. She is a direct descendant of Chief Decorah of the Winnebago’s.
Terry Landsgaard, of West Union, serves asVice president of the Emma Big Bear Foundation. Over the years, Terry has collected many baskets, art and artifacts and has presented at Effigy Mounds National Park, in Marquette, McGregor, and to other social groups. In 2013 he gifted the city of Marquette with his collection of Emma Big Bear baskets and other Native American art and artifacts. Montauk’s collection contains at least one basket attributed to Emma Big Bear.
