Event Description

Even if you don’t consider yourself a “collector,” most of us have objects – whether they’re old or new, family heirlooms or something you bought last week – that we care about and are invested in. In the museum world, we refer to the practices and measures taken to prevent damage or deterioration to objects as preventive conservation. For the casual collector or family history enthusiast, knowing some of the basics of preventive conservation will help you keep your treasures happy and healthy.

In the first program of this series, AAMI Curator Brianna Kim will discuss how to care for photographs, documents, and other two-dimensional paper items. During this program, you’ll learn how to take care of the items you hold dear and see examples of what not to do and good storage materials to choose. Mrs. Kim will also highlight similar items from the AAMI’s collection to share as examples to share that evening.

*Participants are welcome to bring items for personal preservation advice. AAMI staff are not authorized to provide appraisals or authentication.
