Event Description

This exhibition features the work of 15 Central Iowa Fiber Artists. Fiber art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. It focuses on the materials and on the manual labor on the part of the artist as part of the works’ significance, and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility. The term fiber art came into use by curators and art historians to describe the work of the artist-craftsman following World War II. Those years saw a sharp increase in the design and production of “art fabric.” In the 1950s, as the contributions of craft artists became more recognized–not just in fiber but in clay and other media–an increasing numbers of weavers began binding fibers into nonfunctional forms as works of art.

The fiber art exhibition will remain hanging in the Fisher Center Auditorium until the end of July. If you are attending the Linn Creek Arts Festival on July 21 at the Fisher Center, stop into the Auditorium and examine the fiber art on display. The Central Iowa Art Association provides a new art exhibition in the Fisher Auditorium every month of the year, except March and April when the Marshalltown and area schools have their children’s displays. The exhibitions are always free and open to the public. The opening day of the exhibition also features a wine reception and an opportunity to meet the artists participating.

The Central Iowa Art Association invites you to attend the opening reception for the July Fiber Art Exhibition on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 5:30 PM.
