Event Description

Join us on August 25, 2017, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm for the grand opening of our newest exhibit “If Objects Could Talk.” Visitors are invited to explore the galleries and enjoy light refreshments in the lobby.

“If Objects Could Talk,” offers a glimpse of the Museum’s collection of thousands of objects, documents, and photographs. Each item tells a unique story about African American history, communities, and culture in Iowa. The exhibit demonstrates how history can transform everyday objects into invaluable records for learning about local history, change over time, and Iowa’s diverse communities and people.

As part of the opening festivities, the AAMI is partnering with the University of Iowa Library to teach patrons about preserving their pictures and documents. Participants will be able to scan documents and images relating to Iowa’s African American history, receiving a digital copy for themselves while one copy is given to the African American Museum of Iowa. This event will continue through Saturday along with an informational presentation on how to best care for your paper documents at home by Nancy Kraft, Head of Preservation & Conservation at the University of Iowa Libraries.
