Event Description

s a part of a pair of science fiction and fantasy art exhibitions, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art will present a solo exhibition of the work of 26-year old Iowa City artist Ryan Bentzinger. For the past few years, Bentzinger has been working on a science fiction story and illustrating it with vibrant watercolors. With the aim of created a heavily-illustrated book entitled nAMUH (nAMUH is Human backwards), Bentzinger has taken an almost-cinematic approach to illustrating his story, akin to the graphic novel, using watercolor as his medium. The CRMA exhibition will present the prologue and first chapter of that story which comprises 74 of the total 197 watercolors created for the recently-completed book. While each work represents a scene in the story, each also serves as an accomplished, engaging watercolor painting, where the artist pushes the media to its limits. His gruesome-yet-endearing characters live in a post-apocalyptic world and the viewer journeys with them on their adventures in this watercolor world.

This exhibition is made possible by the Hotel-Motel Tax Fund, the Program Grant Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Rockwell Collins, the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, and contributors to the Museum’s Annual Fund.
