Event Description
What fossils can you find under your feet as you explore areas not far from your home? Learn about the many fossils that can be found in the Devonian bedrock of Eastern Iowa laid down 375 million years ago! These fossils represent animals that lived in the ancient shallow sea that covered Iowa during that time. See and touch many such fossils including colonial and solitary corals, crinoids, brachiopods, cephalopods, and trilobites to name a few. Where can you find such fossils locally? What makes “Devonian Fossil Gorge” at Coralville Lake a special place for viewing these fossils? Also see and touch examples of the mineralized bones from the much later Ice Age that can be found along eroding hills and creek banks in Eastern Iowa. These include ground sloth, bison, mammoth, Mastodon, horse and deer among other animals. Bring along any fossils you have found and any questions you have about these ancient creatures found close to home.
