Event Description

This program will take place in Room 40, Schaeffer Hall, which is on the southeast corner of the Pentacrest.

Don Johnson, “The Fossil Guy,” returns in November with educational paleontology programs for children at 2:00pm on Sunday afternoons at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History. All “Fossil Guy” programs are free and open to the public, and include 30-minute talks with audience participation followed by 30-minutes of hands-on interaction with Don’s extensive fossil and replica collection. Presentations are geared toward elementary-age children and their families. Don is an amateur paleontologist from Iowa City with a special interest in fossil vertebrates.  His collection of fossils and fossil replicas is one of the largest in Iowa, and he has experience collecting fossils in Iowa and other states out West.

See many of the other fascinating fossils in “Fossil Guy” Don Johnson’s collection as we travel through deep time!  Learn about the extinct bug-like trilobites that lived in ancient seas, some over 500 million years ago.  From the age of dinosaurs, see & touch fossil bones of the mightyTriceratops that roamed the Western United States over 65 million years ago.  Feel the serrated edge of some of the largest fossilized shark teeth in the world — from the recently-extinct megalodon that dwarfed the modern great white shark!  Use magnifying glasses to inspect many bugs trapped in ancient amber.
