Event Description

The Roman Empire arose from the assassination of Julius Caesar and subsequent rise of his adopted heir Octavian. In 27 BC, Octavian became Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Recognizing the importance of visual propaganda, Augustus continued the centuries-old tradition of honorary marble portrait busts. However, unlike republican men honored with busts, Augustus kept tight control over how he was portrayed and his busts reflect his distinct vision of how he wanted himself to be understood by his subjects. Subsequent emperors like Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, and Caracalla continued to regulate their images, and the portrait bust aesthetic changed as the Empire itself underwent enormous changes and stresses, both internal and external. Trace the history of the Roman Empire through its art by walking through the CRMA Roman collection with Associate Curator Kate Kunau.
