Event Description

Come hear vocalist Randye Jones (Grinnell College) and saxophonist Dr. Damani Phillips (University of Iowa) perform a variety of  musical selections from the rich history of music of the African-American tradition. Originally conceived as a program commemorating the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 13th Amendment, Dr. Phillips and Ms. Jones will explore the development of Black music from the end of the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement – including spirituals, jazz, blues, and rhythm and blues. They will be joined by an all-star cast of Iowa musicians including  Marlys Grimm on piano, Gary Jackson on vocals, Sam Salomone on the Hammond organ, and Eric Thompson on drums. The program is free, open to the public, and appropriate for all ages.
