Event Description

This traveling exhibit explores the fateful contact between Native Americans in Iowa and Euro-Americans. The exhibit focuses on the very different conceptions of “land” that led to misunderstanding, mistrust and conflict between Native Americans and settlers. Federal, state, county and other sites related to Native Americans in Iowa and the history of settlement in the state are featured.

“Whose Land Is This?” shows that cultural misunderstanding, injustice, and environmental responsibility–issues that continue to challenge us today–were central in the history of Native Americans and settlers in Iowa.

This exhibit is a partnership with the UNI Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education.
