Event Description

Since 1963 University of Northern Iowa Professor Emeritus frje Echeverria has followed two paths in painting, the medium of collage and the subject of Florida. The Florida works were painted from observation of the land, architecture and figure. The collages included abstract explorations, depictions of observed subjects, and formulations of imagined circumstances. Relations of form, meaning, and style become apparent when the two paths are seen together.

This exhibition explores the pairing of these paths, showcasing the similarities. Just as an objective view of a landscape can appear to change into something unknowable as it is painted, so can a collage waver between our sense of it as actual material and our sense of it as allusion.
