Northeast Iowa—Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) has announced
the designation of 11 new ag-related sites to the Heritage Area, as well as an upgraded affiliation
level for two previously designated sites. There are now 106 sites within the Heritage Area
interpreting different stories of agriculture, ranging from dairy farms and museums to vineyards and
tractor assembly plants.
New partner site designations include:
Cedar Rock the Walter House, Independence; Point of Interest.
Fayette County Historical Center, West Union; Point of Interest.
Heartland Acres Agribition Center, Independence; Affiliate Site.
Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, Johnston; Point of Interest.
La Porte City FFA Historical & Ag Museum, La Porte City; Point of Interest.
Mathias Ham House, Dubuque; Affiliate Site.
National Cattle Congress, Waterloo; Point of Interest.
New Foundation Goat Dairy, Oelwein; Point of Interest.
Reiman Gardens, Ames; Affiliate Site.
Special Collection Department, Iowa State University Library, Ames; Affiliate Site.
Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Area, Toddville; Affiliate Site.
“We are proud to welcome these sites and attractions as Silos & Smokestacks partners,”
said Don Short, SSNHA President. “Heritage Area sites work together to tell the story of American
agriculture and these new sites are adding important chapters to that story.”
Two current Heritage Area partner sites upgraded their designation to reflect changes in
their interpretive services and hours of operation. They are:
• Carrie Chapman Catt Girlhood Home & Museum, Charles City, Affiliate Site.
• Mines of Spain Recreation Area, Dubuque, Strategic Investment Partner.
Annually, SSNHA holds a designation process where potential sites may apply to be
SSNHA partners. Organizations must demonstrate how their site tells a part of the story of
American agriculture. Partner site designations are divided into three categories based on the level
of interpretation, services and facilities available. Strategic Investment Partners provide full
services, including staff, exhibits, programs and restrooms. Affiliates are open less frequently
and/or have more limited public services. Points of Interest may not be staffed or have public
services.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 37 federally designated heritage
areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. Through the development
of a network of sites, programs, and events, Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area’s mission
is to interpret farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities – past and present. To learn more
