Economic Impact Study

In 2018 Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) completed an Economic Impact Study to get an accurate look at the collective impact SSNHA has across the heritage area.

Results show $309 million in economic impact annually in the region due to SSNHA, with 3.1 million annual visitors to the heritage area. These visitors spend money in the area which in turn creates a positive effect on the overall economy. In addition, Silos & Smokestacks and partner sites support 7,089 jobs in the region across eight sectors including restaurants, hotel and motels, museums and historical sites, and retail stores. SSNHA generates more than $41 million in federal tax revenue.

Together with our partner sites, Silos & Smokestacks successfully collected more than 500 visitor surveys to help determine the economic impact of the heritage area. Five case studies were also conducted to identify the qualitative impacts based on culture and heritage with five unique partner sites including Dysart Historical Society, Grout Museum District, Hansen’s Dairy, Iowa Dairy Center and The Wapsipinicon Mill Museum.
